Learning to give, remembering to care..
Today, I'm saddened by all the stories of dog abandonment, encompassing both adults and puppies. It's a reflection of a broader issue where animals, and even children, are treated as disposable commodities. Despite the dedicated efforts of some, the root of this societal problem remains elusive. It's a complex issue that demands all of our attention and action. While I hope my words may resonate with someone who can make a difference, I recognize the enormity of the challenge. Personally, having rescued four of my five animals, I've learned firsthand the responsibility and empathy they evoke. Animals teach us invaluable lessons, yet society often fails to recognize their worth and inherent rights.
Our modern world fosters a culture of self-centeredness, were convenience reigns supreme. This mentality is detrimental to the fabric of society. I struggle with my own habits, finding myself giving into the very behaviors I detest. The impulse for instant gratification with online purchases is one I'm working to curb. Shifting from "want" to "need" is key. It's why I'm drawn to crafting amigurumi toys; they demand time and attention, with the potential to become cherished heirlooms. I do not want to contribute to the cycle of disposability.
Reflecting on my father's teddy bear, weathered and worn, I'm reminded of its rich history. Each tear and faded color whispers tales of comfort during moments of sadness or adventures shared with a cherished friend. I hold that bear close to my heart, envisioning a similar narrative for every puppy or dog—a life not discarded but treasured, fostering a timeless bond of mutual comfort and companionship with a child or an adult. We all need someone or something that we can share our life with. Giving and receive comfort is a selfless act. It makes us less selfish when we focus on something other than ourselves.
While not every home may be suited for a dog, I firmly believe that every dog deserves the chance for a happy ending. Like children, they deserve to be cherished and loved. It's my hope that people pause to consider the responsibility before bringing either into their lives. The reality is, there aren't enough resources or caregivers to tend to the multitude of lives cast aside. The pain felt by those who tirelessly strive to care for every child or animal in need underscores the urgency of this issue.
With each toy I make I am hoping that I am creating something that will give comfort and possibly joy to serval generations to come. I believe if we try to spread kindness every day it will not just enrich someone else’s life but ours as well.
